NEW YORK (AP) — With the U.S. dog show world’s most prestigious award on the line, canines and their handlers were readying Tuesday for their star turns at the Westminster Kennel Club show. Six finalists had been chosen, and one more was yet to come before all seven face off for best in show around 11 p.m. EDT Tuesday.Rummie the Pekingese aims to bring home the third trophy in 11 years for his small-but-regal breed. Winston the French bulldog is gunning for the title after coming oh-so-close last year. A petit basset griffon Vendéen named Buddy Holly is on the hunt for a big U.S. win after impressive showings in three other countries. An Australian shepherd named Ribbon, an English setter called Cider and a giant schnauzer named Monty also are in the pack of contenders. If Buddy Holly was feeling the pressure, he wasn’t letting it show. Instead, he seemed more concerned late Tuesday afternoon with playing with his people and rejecting the notion of a nap in his crate. “He just...

NEW YORK (AP) — A bracco Italiano named Lepshi won his breed’s debut at the United States’ most prestigious dog show. But that distinction was just playing in the background of a chorus of cheers as Lepshi and eight other examples of his handsome Italian hunting breed took their turns in the ring Tuesday at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.“He’s a wonderful ambassador for the breed,” handler Ryan Wolfe said after the 6-year-old’s win. Lepshi aces the breed’s trademark ground-covering trot, Wolfe explained, and “he loves everybody.”McGraw, known for hits including “Something Like That,” and his wife, country luminary and “1883” co-star Faith Hill, have had a number of bracchi at home and featured them in social media posts. Report: Better Chesapeake Bay water quality ‘remains in the distant future’

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 01:32:36 GMT

Efforts to improve the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay have fallen far short of goals set 40 years ago, and a new report by researchers suggests that achieving those goals remains elusive in the short term.Members of the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee, or STAC, concluded in a report that while there has been progress since goals to reduce pollution were designed 40 years ago, it has been incremental. For example, the report showed that bay water quality standards were reached in 27% of the bay in 1985 but that by 2020, those goals were reached in just the mid-30% range. The report also found “response gaps,” goals set using strategies that failed to get the expected results.Despite the shortcomings of efforts to cut pollution and improve water quality, Kurt Stephenson, a professor at Virginia Tech, said there is encouraging news.“Water quality is trending up in the Bay, which is a great sign,” Stephenson said. ...
