The daughter of Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark was sentenced in a Boston court Wednesday, a matter of months after prosecutors said she hit an officer in the face and defaced a public monument during an anti-police protest in Boston back in January. Police said Riley Dowell, 23, was part of a group of protestors gathered at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common screaming profanities and stopping traffic on the night of the protest.Officers said Dowell was responsible for spraying anti-police graffiti on the property. While placed under arrest, they accused her of flailing her arms and hitting an officer in the face.Dowell was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on charges including assault and battery on a police officer and vandalizing a historic monument. She will now be on probation for one year.Dowell is also required to do 30 hours of community service, write an apology letter to the officer and pay the city back for the cost to clean up the graffiti.

Fresh off winning MVP, 76ers star Joel Embiid surprisingly returns for Game 2 vs. Celtics

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 06:16:10 GMT

There was a notion that because the 76ers stole Monday’s Game 1 without him, that they would give Joel Embiid some extra rest to recover from his injury and not rush him back for Game 2, knowing they had some margin for error after already taking home-court advantage from the Celtics. That idea ultimately didn’t hold water. Embiid – who was named the NBA MVP on Tuesday night – returned for Wednesday night’s Game 2. It came as somewhat of a surprise. Embiid, who suffered a sprained LCL in his right knee during Game 3 of the Sixers’ first-round sweep of the Nets, had not even resumed running as of Monday, according to coach Doc Rivers. The center was listed as doubtful on Tuesday. But even with a 1-0 series lead in hand, Embiid was back.“It’s logical thinking,” Rivers said of the idea of giving him some extra rest. “But players, when they’re healthy, they should play. And when they’re not, they shouldn’t play. That would be my answer. So I can guarantee you if Joel’s p...

New gene therapy being developed at University of Toronto could treat MS

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 06:16:10 GMT

Canada has one of the highest rates of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the world — a chronic condition for which there is no cure. But a new research breakthrough at the University of Toronto has the potential to improve the lives of those living with the disease far beyond current medications.A research team led by neuroscientist Maryam Faiz has developed a “reprogramming technology” that converts cells involved in the progression of MS in the central nervous system (CNS) into cells that promote functional recovery.Faiz explains that there are three main types of cells in the CNS: astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and neurons.“Astrocytes and oligodendrocytes are part of a class of cells that can make more of themselves in the brain, and neurons are static,” she says.Oligodendrocytes produce myelin — the insulating coating that wraps around nerve cells and is really important for fast neuronal transmission or fast signalling within the brain. In some cases,...

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against The New York Times over a 2018 investigative series into his family’s wealth and tax practices was dismissed by a state judge Wednesday. The lawsuit accused the Times and three of its investigative reporters of relentlessly seeking out his estranged niece, Mary Trump, as a source of information and convincing her to turn over confidential documents. The $100 million suit claims the reporters were aware of a settlement agreement barring her from disclosing the documents.Trump sued Mary Trump, the Times and the three reporters in 2021, claiming they were “motivated by a personal vendetta” against him. The Times and its reporters on Wednesday succeeded in getting a judge to dismiss the claims against them.“Plaintiff’s claims against The Times defendants, as an initial matter, fail as a matter of constitutional law,” Robert Reed of the New York State Supreme Court wrote. He said that legal news gathering is “at t...
