Twins set ALDS roster; Byron Buxton not on it

Byron Buxton, who participated in live batting practice on Monday in Houston, was hoping to make the Twins’ decisions a little harder, but in the end, he will be cheering on his teammates again from the bench as the Twins embark on their next playoff series. There was only one change to the playoff roster, set Saturday morning ahead of Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros at 3:45 p.m. at Minute Maid Park. The Twins added Bailey Ober, who will start on Saturday, and subtracted rookie reliever Kody Funderburk, keeping 14 position players and 12 pitchers.Because this series is longer — a best-of-five rather than a best-of-three — the Twins needed an additional starting pitcher. Ober, Pablo López, Sonny Gray and Joe Ryan are all expected to start games in the series, if necessary, with Kenta Maeda available out of the bullpen. Here’s a look at the roster:Pitchers: Bailey Ober, Joe Ryan, Pablo López, Sonny Gray, Kenta Maeda, Jhoan Duran, Caleb Thielbar, B...Christina Caron: The beauty of a silent walk

In a TikTok video that has now amassed nearly 500,000 views, influencer Mady Maio describes taking a walk. But not just any walk: a silent one.For her, the 30-minute stroll was revelatory. No podcasts, no music. Just “me, myself and I.”She was resistant at first. (It was her boyfriend’s idea.) “My anxiety could never,” she said in the video.Maio described the first two minutes as mental “mayhem” that eventually gave way to a “flow state.” Her brain fog lifted. Ideas started popping into her head because she was “giving them space to enter.”The silent walk is TikTok’s latest wellness obsession, a blend of meditation and exercise that aims to improve mental health. Unlike the similarly trendy “hot girl walk,” a four-mile odyssey that requires goal-setting and giving thanks, the silent walk does not involve multitasking. There is no agenda other than to set one foot in front of the other and take note of the world around you.Walking in silence is an ancient tradition rooted in mindfuln...Gloversville Fall Fest rescheduled due to weather

Who would win a football game between the CU Buffs and Air Force Falcons? Does it matter? The local media would only care about what Deion Sanders’ celebrity guest list might look like on the CU sideline.MaGee, healthy cynicKiz: Coach Prime and the Buffs are the best story in college football. But the undefeated Air Force Falcons are the best college football team in the state. The Zoomies would ground and pound the Buffs to a pulp. Is there any way we could arrange a showdown at a bowl game? Zoomies 31, Buffs 27. My score. Sticking to it.I’ve always appreciated how you’re not afraid to point out when something stinks with the Broncos. I rarely read about the horrendous job general manager George Paton has done with this team. Cutting linebacker Randy Gregory and eating the cap hit seems to be in a long line of garbage moves by Paton, dating back to his time with Minnesota and his role in giving quarterback Kirk Cousins a horrific contract. Although Russell Wilson ...These are the best games in the 49ers’ six-decade rivalry with the Cowboys

A rivalry dating back 63 years is renewed Sunday night when the Dallas Cowboys visit the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium before a sellout crowd and a national television audience. In all games, the two teams are 19-19-1, with the 49ers 10-10 at home and 9-9-1 on the road. The postseason battles have been the most memorable, with the Cowboys leading 5-4, but the 49ers have won the last three, including each of the last two seasons. Dallas has won eight NFC championships to the 49ers’ seven. Each franchise has five Super Bowl wins. The regular season has had its moments as well, with the 49ers holding a 15-14-1 advantage. Here are five to remember:Nov. 13, 1994 at Candlestick Park49ers 21, Cowboys 14Dallas had won in each of the previous two NFC title games. US prosecutors in Manhattan yesterday revealed eight criminal counts against the FTX founder and federal regulators said he committed a range of securities and derivatives law violations. Photographer: Ting Shen/Bloomberg It was the middle of the coronavirus lockdowns and actor Ben McKenzie was out of work and depressed. So McKenzie – perhaps best known for his role as heartthrob Ryan in the early 2000s teen drama “The OC” – curiously becomes a journalist, at least temporarily, thanks to an old friend named Dave. The pal suggested McKenzie invest in cryptocurrencies, technology’s new-fangled twist on money that was the hot bet of the early pandemic days. Due to a bad experience with a previous tip from Dave – an ill-fated medical company – research was in order, and it wasn’t like ...How Biden’s promises to reverse Trump’s immigration policies crumbled

WASHINGTON — Immigration was dead simple when Joe Biden was campaigning for president: It was an easy way to attack Donald Trump as a racist, and it helped to rally Democrats with the promise of a more humane border policy.Nothing worked better than Trump’s “big, beautiful wall” that he was building along the southern border. Its existence was as much a metaphor for the polarization inside America as it was a largely ineffective barrier against foreigners fleeing to the United States from Central America.“There will not be,” Biden proclaimed as he campaigned against Trump in the summer of 2020, “another foot of wall constructed.”But a massive surge of migration in the Western Hemisphere has scrambled the dynamics of an issue that has vexed presidents for decades, and radically reshaped the political pressures on Biden and his administration. Instead of becoming the president who quickly reversed his predecessor’s policies, Biden has repeatedly tried to curtail the migration of a rec...Bay Area high school football roundup 2023: Best of Week 7 action

Exactly six months after Susan Gonyo retired, the calls began coming in. She had spent two-and-a-half decades teaching at a Santa Rosa elementary school, and as soon as the mandatory 180-day separation period set by the state’s teacher pension agency had passed, her former principal was already asking her to return. It was right after pandemic-era school closures. The teacher shortage was just getting worse. And so, 67-year-old Gonyo went back to the classroom — first as a substitute, and then as a part-time teacher.Previously retired teacher Susan Gonyo sits with two of her second grade students, Gave Hernandez, 7, left, and Azaliea Gage, 6, answering their questions at John B. Riebli School in Santa Rosa. After 25 years of teaching, Gonyo retired in 2022 ; however, after her former principal asked her to return, she came back to the classroom at age 67 .
