Letters: Lauren Boebert’s “Beetlejuice” spectacle is just her brand in Congress

Boebert’s antics are unacceptableRe: “Boebert escorted out of musical,” Sept. 13 news storyI read with great dismay about Lauren Boebert’s behavior at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts the other night. I’m not sure how many “ordinary” citizens are escorted out of the theater due to bad behavior. However, when one is elected to represent a portion of a state’s population, you might expect that, that representative would be able to handle herself in public in a manner that did not detract from the event that her fellow attendees paid for, let alone draw attention to her self such that she is asked to leave. How sad is it that a large portion of the State of Colorado is represented by someone who has so little respect for others that she carried on in a public setting where decorum is enforced to assure the attendees benefit from the experience?Unfortunately, this is just another example of her public behavior. Most of the time she is in the news, it is because...

John Cooper Clarke at the Moroccan: Fans of old school, classic British punk will know the name John Cooper Clarke. The Mancunian punk poet laureate made a name for himself articulating the plight of the working class better than most, and his acerbic wit made him a hit with those enamored with caustic, raw music. Few poets were able to insert themselves into a music scene so seamlessly and comfortably, and Clarke is still a gem today. It’s be fascinating to see what the good doctor pulls out at the Moroccan.John Cooper Clarke at the Moroccan: The event takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at the Moroccan Lounge.Photo licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license.                                                ...

By Jenavieve Hatch, The Sacramento BeeAlice Rogers admitted that identifying as a Democrat in Siskiyou County felt a bit “like coming out.”She stood under a canopy of tall trees in Weed’s Carrick Park on a warm June afternoon along with about 100 other local Democrats at the county party’s annual fundraising dinner.Like many Democratic women across the U.S., Rogers, the chair of the Democratic Central Committee of Siskiyou County, and Robin Richards, the committee’s treasurer, were called to action after the election Donald Trump in 2016, as they watched their Republican neighbors ride the MAGA wave further to the right.“I didn’t know there were other Democrats in Siskiyou County,” said Rogers, a lifelong Democrat. But as she and Richards realized there were more Democrats than they thought — 35% of the county voted for Hillary Clinton — they began to strategize.“We were so angry,” said Rogers. “And we were both retired, so we had the time for it.”Rural north state Democrats have lo...

Brazil’s Lula pitches his nation — and himself — as fresh leader for Global South

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 02:32:52 GMT

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — “Brazil is back.” That has been Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s refrain for the better part of the last year, with the president deploying the snappy slogan to cast Brazil — and himself — as a leader of the Global South no longer content to abide the world’s outdated workings.Last year, Lula thwarted the reelection bid of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, who showed little interest in geopolitics or diplomacy during his four years in office. Lula, by contrast, has crisscrossed the globe and visited 21 countries in recent months, from the United States to China, Italy to India, Argentina to Angola. He has sought to boost Brazil’s cred with each state visit and speech, one multilateral forum after another. On Tuesday, his address at the U.N. General Assembly marked his return to that rostrum for the first time since 2009, the last year of his previous presidency’s second term.“Brazil is reencountering itself, the region, the world and multilateralism,” ...
