For success in Minnesota’s deer hunt, head south

Published Thu, 14 Nov 2024 08:55:01 GMT

For success in Minnesota’s deer hunt, head south Lonnie St. Arnold has been deer hunting up by Brimson, Minn., since 1986, through thick and thin, and lately it’s been nothing but thin.In an area with among the fewest deer harvested per square mile anywhere in Minnesota, and a region that has been socked with the snowiest string of winters in more than a half-century, St. Arnold and his partners in the Stone Lake Whitetail Club have seen plenty of lean years for deer. But maybe nothing as bad as this year.“We were up to Brimson last week (for) some four-wheeling, bird hunting and checking deer sign,” St. Arnold, of Cloquet, reported recently. “We didn’t see a track, deer (pellets), rubs, scrapes … nothing. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it that bad.”He isn’t alone. Across much of the Arrowhead region, people who have been out in the woods say this may be as few or fewer deer than after the harsh winters of the mid-1990s, or maybe even back to the 1970s, when deer numbers were so low that, in 1971, the DNR canceled the season entirely.C...

Ask Amy: Family challenges make it hard to shower Dear Amy: I am writing to ask for your advice on my upcoming bridal shower.I have a difficult relationship with my parents and sibling and I have worked to set boundaries in the past few years that have made me happier in general.I no longer choose to feel personally responsible for their happiness or success, because they make their own choices and resist help.My concern lies with my aunts and uncles.During family events, they each pull me aside individually and expect details and personal conversations regarding my parents and sibling. They make me feel personally responsible for these problems and the result is that I feel terrible for months. What is a polite way to handle their questions on what is supposed to be a happy day for me?I’m tired of my entire family life revolving around my immediate family’s drama.— Dreading the Inevitable in OhioDear Dreading: Landmark events (such as weddings and their attendant celebrations) can be nerve-wracking, especially in f...

US urges American citizens to evacuate Lebanon The U.S. State Department on Friday recommended that U.S. citizens in Lebanon evacuate while flights are available due to an “unpredictable security situation” amid the escalating regional conflict.“You should have a plan of action for crisis situations that does not rely on U.S. government assistance,” the statement read. “The best time to leave a country is before a crisis if at all possible.”“There is no guarantee the U.S. government will evacuate private U.S. citizens and their family members in a crisis situation,” the statement added. “In the event that a U.S. military-assisted evacuation does occur, our focus will be on helping U.S. citizens. The U.S. government generally cannot provide in-country transportation during a crisis. That includes transportation to points of departure.”The release recommended that such individuals review flight options at Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport. The statement comes as back-and-forth strikes between the Israeli Defense Forces...

Patriots-Dolphins preview: How Bill Belichick can pull another upset in Miami Now do it again.Last weekend’s upset of the Bills won’t be enough for the Patriots (2-5) to reverse course on their season, but beating Miami could start an impressive U-turn. The Pats are slated as 9-point underdogs in South Florida, where they’ve struggled historically. The Patriots are 2-8 in their last 10 visits, and haven’t beaten the Dolphins on the road in the post-Brady era.Expect them to follow a similar formula to what they executed against Buffalo: quick passing, more run-pass-options, defensive schemes to get instant pressure and an eye on the field position battle. Here’s how Sunday should go down in Miami:When the Patriots runSuddenly, the Pats are among the steadiest rushing teams in the NFL.They rank ninth in success rate over the last three weeks, indicating an ability to stay on-schedule and move the chains. Moving right guard Mike Onwenu over to right tackle factored into some of their success, though something must be said for overall...
