Twins’ bullpen blowup leads to 6-2 loss against Rangers

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:49:51 GMT

With future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer on the mound, it’s no surprise that runs were hard to come by for the Twins on Saturday night. For eight innings, Joe Ryan, the bullpen and the team’s defense made sure that was the case for Texas, too.It was a tight game throughout, until reliever Griffin Jax ran into trouble in the ninth inning and walked a pair of batters with the bases loaded. The Rangers would score another two runs after his departure, pulling away for a 6-2 win over the Twins at Target Field.“The situation kind of went up in smoke a little bit in some ways and we just didn’t throw strikes and command the ball the way we needed to,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “… Griff’s been excellent for us. Very good lately. He’s pitched in some big situations lately as he normally would. I’ve really liked what I’ve seen from him. Today wasn’t his day.”Jax, pitching in the ninth after Jhoan Duran took care of the top of the Rangers’ order an inning earlier, allowed base hits to ...

New York Liberty run around and shoot over Minnesota Lynx in 111-76 win

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:49:51 GMT

Those whooshing sounds inside Target Center Saturday night were generally one of two things: a New York Liberty player again blowing past a Lynx defender or another Liberty shot hitting nothing but net. There was plenty of both.Breanna Stewart scored 27 of her game-high 38 points in the first half — 17 in the first quarter alone — and the Liberty cruised past Minnesota 111-76.New York’s total just missed a Lynx record for points allowed in a regulation game. Las Vegas scored 113 on July 9. The 35-point loss was five shy of the franchise record, set July 12 against Dallas.Yes, Stewart is one of the top players in the world and, yes, she plays on one of the best WNBA teams, but many of her makes were somewhat contested. Sitting out the fourth quarter, she finished 12 for 17 from the field, including 6 of 8 from deep, as New York — whose 27-7 record trails only defending champion Las Vegas’ 30-5 mark — rolled to a 65-35 halftime lead.It is the most points the Lynx have allowed in ...

Rockies blow early lead to Orioles, lose sixth consecutive game

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:49:51 GMT

BALTIMORE — The Rockies are struggling mightily in the school of hard knocks.Despite a solid start from right-hander Chris Flexen, despite an early 2-0 lead, and despite an eighth-inning rally, the Rockies once again failed the test. They fell, 5-4, to the Orioles Saturday night before a raucous sellout crowd of 42,535 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Rockies, relying more and more on young players, have dropped six consecutive games and have lost 10 straight on the road. It’s their second 10-game road losing streak of the season.Flexen, throwing a killer changeup, was excellent through his first five innings. He struck out a season-high seven — getting strike threes on six changeups — and he yielded just one unearned run.“It felt really good tonight and I’ve continued to work on it,” Flexen said of his changeup. “I’ve been struggling early on with it, so I’ve continued to put in the work. It’s always been a big part of my arse...

He reached double-digit strikeouts for the 20th time in his career and fourth this season. “He was electric tonight,” Thomson said. “He was as good as you can be.”Wheeler finished second in the Cy Young voting in 2021 and could make a late push to be a contender this season.Wheeler made a mechanical adjustment to...

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Josef Newgarden will be looking to make IndyCar history Sunday as he seeks his sixth consecutive win on an oval track at the Bommarito Automotive Group 500.Newgarden is looking to become the second driver to win six straight races on oval tracks and the first since A.J. Foyt won seven straight races on ovals in 1964. “I don’t really focus on it,” Newgarden said. “For me, a win is a win. They’re difficult to come by in IndyCar. It doesn’t matter where you are. If you’re here at World Wide technology Raceway, the Indy 500 or it’s Long Beach or St. Pete, it doesn’t matter. They’re all difficult to win races so you cherish each and every one of them.”Newgarden’s run on ovals dates to last year’s race at WorldWide Technology Raceway just east of St. Louis where he has won three consecutive races and four overall dating back to 2017.Newgarden sits in third place in the IndyCar driver standings with 434 points, trailing Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon by four p...

Because Buescher already had won, Wallace got the 16th and final playoff spot on points.Ryan Preece flipped about a dozen times after sliding into the infield grass with six laps to go and came to a halt in his mangled No. 41 Ford. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver was able to get out with help before emergency personnel put him on a gurney and into an ambulance for a quick trip to the infield care center.Preece’s crash with SHR teammate Chase Briscoe sent the race into overtime. Buescher was out front for the restart and Keselowski stayed in line to keep them 1-2 at the checkered flag. Seventeen drivers star...

The entire Miami bench emptied, and Jaguars players also came onto the field as Davis laid face-down on the turf for several minutes.“For Daewood, I don’t think he woke up this morning understanding that there are repercussions playing this sport, that this was going to happen,” said Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who suffered two high-profile concussions last season. “I don’t think anyone wakes up thinking things like that are going...
