PHOENIX — There were plenty of fireworks for the Mets on the fourth of July and in the end, there was plenty to celebrate. The Mets opened a six-game road trip by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-5, Tuesday at Chase Field, marking the first time in over a month the Mets have won three straight and only the fifth time this season the Amazins’ have won at least three in a row (longest winning streak is five games). There were six homers hit between the Mets (39-46) and Diamondbacks (50-36), but it was Francisco Alvarez who slugged the most impactful one. With one on and one out and the game tied 4-4 in the seventh, Alvarez battled right-hander Miguel Castro (4-3) for seven pitches. The catcher then sent the last one onto the concourse in left-center field for the go-ahead shot to give the Mets a 6-4 lead.Starling Marte had a two-run blast in the fourth inning off right-hander Zach Davies that gave the Mets a 3-1 lead. Between the gloomy, humid rain and poor showing by the Red Sox in a 6-2 loss, there was little to celebrate on Independence Day at Fenway Park.Boston’s baseball team is in a difficult spot; the lineup is woefully inconsistent, and they’ve lost most of their starting pitching to injuries, which also hurts and overtires the bullpen, which is also missing key contributors. Even the best farm systems would struggle to find three or four meaningful, legitimate replacements for a rotation, but for the Red Sox, who began the season with more starters than they knew what to do with, it’s been an almost absurd turn of events that their surplus hasn’t been enough.Brayan Bello could’ve started against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday afternoon, but with the rest of the rotation injured, demoted to the bullpen, or on the paternity list (James Paxton), Alex Cora wouldn’t risk pushing his young star.“We have to take care of him,” the Red Sox manager exp...Old Ironsides salute

The USS Constitution made it’s annual turnaround cruise Tuesday, hailing Independence Day and the crowds that came out to view her with two volleys from her historic guns, a 21-gun salute at Fort Independence at Castle Island, and a 17-gun salute off the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston, the former site of the Edmund Hartt’s Shipyard, where she was launched in 1797.Guests on board included 150 members of the public who won the spot in a lucky lottery draw for spaces. The turnaround cruise dates to the 1950’s when it was deemed necessary to make the change so that the historic ship’s hull weathered evenly. The USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat and earned the nickname “Old Ironsides” in the War of 1812 when British cannonballs were seen bouncing off her wooden hull.Bridget and Adrianne Downey, from left, along with their aunt Tricia Conlon, wave and throw balloons in hopes that their parents, who are aboard the USS Constitution, could see them as the s...Column: As Chicago Cubs continue to rise and fall, Jed Hoyer faces a difficult deadline decision

As the Chicago Cubs yo-yo their way through the 2023 season, President Jed Hoyer has experienced the same highs and lows as their fans.Maintaining an even keel is something players and managers have talked about for decades, but it’s easier said than done when the Aug. 1 trade deadline is approaching and everyone expects you to make some moves. After the post-London cold stretch, time is running out on Hoyer to decide whether to buy or sell.“That’s the job,” Hoyer said Tuesday before the Cubs’ 7-6, 11-inning win over the Milwaukee Brewers. “You have to constantly realize that how you present yourself matters. In a great year you’re going to lose 40% of the games and you have to maintain real perspective.“And that means you have to maintain real perspective when you win nine out of 10 or lose nine out of 10. They’re the same thing. It’s really difficult. … I don’t think I’m perfect at it — my wife and...Fourth of July at the Esplanade: Crowds turn up, the show goes on

A soggy start by gray-skied Mother Nature didn’t hamper the holiday spirit of hundreds of patriots – rocking red, white and blue in all varieties – who showed up at the Esplanade to celebrate America’s 247th birthday.Back Bay resident Lou Spelios showed up at 3 a.m., nine hours before gates opened at noon. He was second in line. After reading about the annual Fourth of July celebration at the Hatch Memorial Shell, he said he learned it takes “some effort” to get a close seat.“It was raining torrents, just torrents,” Spelios said after plopping down his green beach chair in the front row around 12:15. “I was just sitting there thinking ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this. I can’t believe I’m doing this.’”Massachusetts State Police shut down entry to the Esplanade around 2:30 p.m. due to the rain, lightning and wind. Authorities reopened the venue at 5, with the concert and fireworks scheduled to go on as planned.Kimberly Vanaman left her Newton home around 4 a.m., getti...As Israel winds down West Bank offensive, rockets from Gaza raise risk of fighting on new front
